The Dot - Peter H. Reynolds

I feel like I have talked about The Dot before maybe? I love having picture books in my 'Bag of Tricks' with fun, easy art projects or activities to go with them. This one is awesome...

The Dot is a cute story about a little girl who discovers art  through a simple series of dot paintings.  The students were able to paint their own dot, or not-a-dot, with watercolors.  This was a nice simple opportunity for students to use paints and learn the expectations for using watercolors.

I have also seen doing dot art projects after this where students make a design and use dots to "colour" it in.

These are easy art projects you can use felt markers, crayons, or paint and white paper. Get the story book for your bag of tricks or see if the library has a copy when you are in a bind and need an activity. This is ideal for primary, though I don't see why you couldn't also do with older students too.

The Dot by Peter Reynolds - Art Lesson

This blog by a BC TTOC had a great Art project she tried recently that I wanted to share. She writes:
Book: The Dot by Peter Reynolds. I was able to find it in the school library and I did not need any other materials other than the students' own pencil crayons and some large square pieces of paper that I took a few minutes to cut from 11x17 sheets. The Dot is a wonderful book about believing in yourself and believing in your artwork. Here is a good synopsis. Peter Reynolds is passionate about inspiring kids to be creative and take risks and to feel proud of and confident in their artwork
She used the art lesson found here after reading the book and showing a short youtube clip of the story.

I can't wait to try this - I love these types of activities and the kids do also! As a TTOC it is always good to have these kinds of lesson plans ready - just in case!
