Growth Mindset in Picture Books
Picture Books are fantastic learning tools for all ages.
While primary is where we see the most picture books and read alouds, there is
power in using these types of books at all grade levels – yes even secondary!
My middle schoolers always loved picture books and inferring and connecting
through stories.
Here are a few recommendations for Social Emotional
Learning Picture Books, specifically around the topic of growth mindset. Some
of these books were suggested to me from teachers taking an SEL education
course. Enjoy!
Rosie dreams of being an
engineer until her uncle laughs at one of her inventions. After that
Rosie keeps her dreams to herself until her great aunt helps her see how
failures can be turned into opportunity. You can use this story for
teaching a growth mindset. Consider bring in recycled materials and see
what the students can create. Talk about the process and any challenges
along the way/what students did when there were challenges.

It’s okay to make
mistakes – by Todd Parr
Todd Parr shares examples of mistakes that happen and the silver
lining that comes along with mistakes.

This story follows two
children with very different approaches to life. Bubble gum brain embraces
challenges and isn’t afraid to try new things, or make mistakes. Brick
brain has more of a fixed mindset.
