SEL Sunday Reads: Mindful Practice

I have been doing weekly SEL Sunday Reads for a couple months and this is likely my last one for a while. I wanted to include some around mindfulness.

Here are a few recommendations for Social Emotional Learning Picture Books, specifically around the topic of mindfulness Some of these books were suggested to me from teachers taking an SEL education course. Enjoy!

SEL Sunday Reads: Environmental Stewardship

Here are a few recommendations for Social Emotional Learning Picture Books, specifically around the topic of conservation and appreciation of the environment. Some of these books were suggested to me from teachers taking an SEL education course. Enjoy!

The Six Cedar Trees – by Margot Landahl and Celestine Aleck
In this picture book we explore the strengths of Pacific Northwest Coast animals. An eagle is settled in a tall grove of cedar trees on a school playground. The story tells about six animals and their strengths and how these animals can help us develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and our own strengths. It is an excellent example of combining worldviews and principles from the environment and land we live.
Through each animal we can explore Core Competencies in a meaningful way. For example, the Wolf is the great communicator. Emphasis is placed on the importance of social and emotional learning with our students and this connects directly to the First Peoples Principles of Learning.
